Cross Cultural Business Communications: Understanding how to work and live in a global economy (BUMA 436, CEUs: 1.4)

What competencies and management skills will managers and executives need to run national or international organizations in the future? The Economist Intelligence Unit asked 10,000 senior executives in North America, Europe, and Asia to answer this question. One of their key points was that mangers' handling of diversity will be the most significant factor affecting corporate success.

This cross cultural business communication class is for professionals who deal with more than one culture in their daily lives, at work or during business travels. Skillful professionals need to identify individual competencies to understand how different cultures interact with one another and how to be successful in diverse environments - in the Silicon Valley and abroad.

Professionals will learn how to develop a global perspective, how to categorize and analyze different cultures to find out which cultural factors are important and why, and how to efficiently and effectively approach working with a cross cultural team.

Classes will include group discussions and case studies. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in individual exercises and hear guest speakers. It will also include 8 tools to measure universal cultural orientations:

  • Spoken Communication
  • Non-verbal Communication
  • Individualist vs Group,
  • Universalist vs. Particularist
  • Leadership Styles
  • International Negotiation
  • Concept of Space
  • Concept of Time
  • Reconciling Cultural Differences:
  • Dos and Don'ts in cultures across the world
  • Social rules and etiquette
