Coaching for Performance and Teamwork (BUMA 430, CEUs: 1.4)

An empowering leader encourages others to succeed, to develop new skills, to take initiative, and gives balanced feedback to reinforce or improve performance. Developing the mindset and skills of a coach enables supervisors and managers to empower the people they lead.

Coaching has been shown to be a powerful tool for supporting high performance, encouraging good work habits, building trust and commitment, and for aligning individual goals with team and organizational goals. A coaching leadership style improves managers' interaction skills which, in turn, improve employee morale and productivity, and everyone's ability to increase customer satisfaction.

Topics include:

  • Coaching principles, models and competencies
  • Assessing your own coaching skills
  • Language and communication skills of coaching
  • Tools for enhancing cooperation and teamwork
  • Discussing career development for employees
  • Reinforcing employee learning and training
  • Improving performance and fostering accountability
  • Giving balanced, meaningful feedback

You will experience a shift from control to collaborating with others in your own leadership style. Activities include interactive discussion of the coaching process, live coaching by guest coaches, peer coaching, mini case studies and fieldwork. Fieldwork will require about two hours on the job between sessions.
